Independent online digital retailer eMusic.com is now offering a different sort of audio for its patrons to consume – audiobooks. Now that multi-media portable devices are available in the millions around the world (mp3 phones included), the demand is elevating for audiobooks in DRM-free mp3 formats. To support this demand, eMusic has just inked agreements with audiobook publishers such as Random House, Penguin, Naxos, and Blackstone among others.

Piper Jaffray & Co. recently released figures showing nearly $300 million in audiobook sales by the end of 2008.
